In two minds, but still hooked!, October 4, 2011

I'm a great fan of the Jack Reacher character and series and was left in two minds as to whether this does justice to them. On the one hand, from a character development point of view, I think that THE AFFAIR is excellent and is a natural extension showing us a younger slightly less experienced and more fallible Reacher. The writing is fantastic and as usual I was hooked from the first page to the last as we follow Reacher assigned to a case by the Military Police. The description is spot on and the pace frantic, even though there is are less violent parts than some of the earlier books in the series. He is teamed up with a beautiful local Sheriff and the inevitable happens as they carry out the investigation which proves to have wide-reaching implications.

On the other hand, there are some serious flaws to the storyline itself. One is Reacher's reason for leaving the Army and the other is the rather dubious conclusion to the book. The Sheriff is just too gorgeous and the gratuitous sex scenes are over-done and unnecessary. I would have preferred to see a deeper reason for Jack leaving the Army, disagreeing with Black Ops or cruelty to prisoners of war, that sort of thing.

If the storyline was as developed as the character then this would definitely be a great thriller. As it is THE AFFAIR is good, but for me far from the best in what remains a gripping series.

I loved this book! As a rule, I will read anything that Lee Child writes, anything that Lee Child recommends, and anything that Lee Child might even use as a coaster- he's just that good. This book is probably my favorite of his (It's just SO hard to pick one). Lee introduces us to Jack Reacher when he was still an MP. Reacher is sent on a mission to help find a murderer in a small town, and potentially cover up any army scandal. Lee, as always fills the book with visually pleasing descriptions, strong character development, and helps us see into Reacher's oh so interesting past. I read this in one sitting- a tough task as a working mom of 5- but it can be done!

If you're a fan of the Jack Reacher series, you already know that Lee Child is currently the undisputed master of the unputdownable thriller. When it comes to narrative momentum and expertly wrought tension, his only rival is the late, great Dick Francis.

However, the last two Reachers - though good - left me a bit cold because I was getting tired of the "Reacher stumbles into small-town corruption" formula. Fortunately, THE AFFAIR flashes back to his army career, where he faces his true arch-nemesis, the military bureaucracy, and we learn why he decided to drop out and become a toothbrush-packing drifter. Even though the novel is mainly set in yet another bleak small town, I'm happy to report that Reacher is back to form. This latest adventure delivers the expected page-turning excitement, plus a few other bonuses:

* Both the beginning and the end are better than usual. Child tends to be too abrupt for my taste. Here he takes the time to set the scene at the Pentagon and ease past the climax in a very satisfying way.

* The love interest, the ex-marine sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux, is Child's most entertaining female character so far. She's not just there to be Reacher's girl. She has an extra dimension and is important to the story.

* The "midnight special" train that roars past Carter Crossing every night is an ingenious device Child uses to ratchet up the suspense, provide a menacing undercurrent, and structure the complicated action in a clear way. It's the most impressive example yet of Child's narrative skill. Plus, choo-choos are just plain cool.

A new reader to the series may find the staccato rhythm of the sentences a bit off-putting at first, and Reacher's tough-guy terseness here and there verging on self-parody. But they're essential ingredients in Child's hugely enjoyable, impressively consistent franchise. Overall, I rank THE AFFAIR with the best of the series, up there with PERSUADER, ONE SHOT, and THE ENEMY.

Although I was able to find some good information in this book, overall I found it frustrating.

The author makes sweeping generalizations like, "All gifted kids are ____" or "All private schools are _____." I was left with the feeling that she thinks she, personally, is the only person qualified to make decisions about gifted kids. There was just no faith that parents know what is best for their kids or that schools genuinely want to help.

Her chapters on school selection did not reflect my experience at all. (My kids both attend a terrrific public "Gifted Center" school, and we have found the people there responsive, warm, and very very good at what they do.)

Some of the advice is painfully obvious. Don't, for example, say to your child, "Your weird questions are going to send me to an early grave." (I bet you already knew not to do that.) There were also some problems with the writing and some typos or oversights that gave the book an amateurish feel.

Having said all that, I must admit that there were times when a paragraph seemed to be talking about my child or my experience, and a few things were astute enough that I read them aloud to my husband. Thus the second star.

But overall, the author, while clearly very bright, came across as bossy and inflexible with very clear prejudices. Why, for example, did she feel the need to point out what high-powered careers and high-status backgrounds all the parents came from? Does she believe gifted kids are only born into wealthy families? It almost felt like name-dropping.

Bottom line? I'm very glad I didn't have to buy the copy I read. I've definitely read other, better books on this topic.

Pick a different book.

Raising Gifted Kids starts off well, describing the support it will offer us later. Sounds good. But the book goes off track quickly.

Klein talks about test scores, describing scores, standard deviations, and descriptions from various tests and test versions, apparently as old as 1970's versions, interchangeably. But they're not interchangeable, and mixing them up this way will confuse parents who don't have another source of testing information, and don't understand the differences between old and modern test versions, and between one modern test and another.

Klein then offers a number of vignettes, which vary from predictable to extreme. These are not supportive because no matter what, the parents are the bad guys. After the introduction talking about all the help and support Raising Gifted Kids will offer us, this chapter tells us how awful we are, and all our good intentions are wrong. Pick a specific gifted school for your child? Wrong. Send your gifted child to public school? Wrong. Live in an isolated rural area and homeschool your gifted child? Very wrong. And lots more. Throughout the vignettes, the psychologist knows the single right answer for each child after only an assessment.

The rest of the book seems more positive, but has it's confusing moments. All gifted kids are not alike educationally or emotionally, and the sweeping generalizations are too grand. More mistaken impressions left behind, especially among parents who are reading for support.

Parents are, for the most part, doing a good job raising their gifted children. Those who aren't, aren't going to read a book about what we need to know - they already know they're doing a perfect job. Good parents need understanding and support. That's why we're buying a book called Raising Gifted Kids: Everything You Need to Know to Know to Help Your Exceptional Child Thrive.

Like our kids, we parents of the gifted don't need someone to tell us how bad we are, how all our choices are wrong. We need someone to point out what we're doing right, and what we can do better. That's the kind of support we need. That's what Raising Gifted Kids should have given us.

I got this product because the cat traipses all over the computer and I need protection to keep it clean, as I am a bit of a neat freak. It gets the job done and it looks neat (many a passerby have oohed and aahed in the library). By itself it stays on firmly, however the cat has managed to pull it off when jealous and tries to run off with it! Needless to say it is highly coveted!

It is a nice looking product but it doesn't have the best fit with macbook pro. The other downside is if you plan on writing at night I don't suggest turning up your button lights. The letters being printed on the silicone cover don't line up exactly with the letters on the keyboard creating a strange dizzying effect.

"Sounds & Perfumes" is extroadinarily beautiful. It has warmth and heart. It amazes me that Crossan performs each work straight through, and with no editing. I'm playing this CD over and over! His Debussy is just exquisite. These composers seem very congenial to the artist.
